Description
A cross section of the rectum showing abscesses in both the pararectal and perianal spaces. The perianal abscess sits superficially beneath the perianal skin, while the pararectal collection occupies the space alongside the rectal wall above the levator ani muscle. Perianal abscesses are the most superficial and most easily drained. Pararectal abscesses are deeper and may require more complex drainage approaches. Both typically originate from infected anal glands and can develop into fistula tracts if not adequately managed. The model supports surgical education and anatomy teaching on anorectal sepsis.
