Description
A cross section of the rectum and anal canal showing hemorrhoids, dilated vascular cushions in the anal canal. Internal hemorrhoids arise above the dentate line from the superior rectal venous plexus, while external hemorrhoids develop below the dentate line from the inferior rectal plexus. Hemorrhoidal disease is among the most common anorectal conditions, affecting roughly half of adults by age 50. Symptoms include painless rectal bleeding, prolapse, itching, and discomfort. Treatment ranges from dietary modification and topical therapy to banding and surgical hemorrhoidectomy. The model supports patient education, primary care teaching, and colorectal surgery training.
