Description

A 3D cross-section model of actinic keratosis showing the dysplastic keratinocytes confined to the epidermis with underlying solar elastosis in the dermis. The surface shows the rough, scaly, erythematous patch on sun-damaged skin. Actinic keratoses are precancerous lesions resulting from cumulative UV-induced DNA damage to keratinocytes. Atypical cells with disordered maturation replace the normal epidermal architecture from the basal layer upward but do not breach the basement membrane. Approximately 5-10% of untreated actinic keratoses progress to invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The surrounding dermis shows solar elastosis, the basophilic degeneration of collagen characteristic of photoaging. Actinic keratosis is the most common precancerous skin lesion and a fundamental dermatology teaching case. Medical advisory board reviewed. Clean geometry for rendering, real-time engines, and 3D printing.
