Description
A 3D cross-section model of basal cell carcinoma showing the basaloid tumor nests extending from the epidermis into the dermis. The peripheral palisading of cells at the tumor margin and the retraction artifact (clefting) between tumor and stroma are characteristic features. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common human cancer. Histologically, the tumor consists of nests and cords of basaloid cells with high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratios. The peripheral cells align in a palisade pattern, and mucinous stroma surrounds the tumor islands. Growth patterns — nodular, superficial, morpheaform, and infiltrative — determine surgical margin requirements and recurrence risk.
