Description
A 3D cross-section model of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma showing the irregular nests and cords of atypical squamous cells breaching the basement membrane and invading the dermis. Keratin pearl formation is visible within the tumor islands. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin arises from malignant keratinocytes that penetrate the basement membrane. Well-differentiated tumors produce keratin pearls — concentric whorls of cornified cells within the tumor nests. Poorly differentiated tumors lose keratinization and have higher metastatic potential. Perineural and lymphovascular invasion are high-risk histological features that upstage the tumor.
