The small, flesh-colored bump protrudes slightly above the skin surface. Closed comedones form when the follicular opening is occluded by a tightly packed layer of stratum corneum, trapping sebum and keratin within the follicle. Unlike open comedones, the retained material cannot oxidize, maintaining a white or flesh-colored appearance. Closed comedones are considered the precursor to inflammatory acne because the sealed environment promotes anaerobic bacterial growth and follicular wall pressure.
