Description
A 3D cross-section model of a whitehead (closed comedone) showing the distended follicular infundibulum filled with keratin and sebum beneath an intact, closed follicular ostium. The small, flesh-colored bump protrudes slightly above the skin surface. Closed comedones form when the follicular opening is occluded by a tightly packed layer of stratum corneum, trapping sebum and keratin within the follicle. Unlike open comedones, the retained material cannot oxidize, maintaining a white or flesh-colored appearance. Closed comedones are considered the precursor to inflammatory acne because the sealed environment promotes anaerobic bacterial growth and follicular wall pressure. The closed comedone model demonstrates the earliest stage of acne lesion development. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time engines, and 3D printing.
