Description

A 3D model showing the layers of the small intestinal wall in an exploded or dissected view. The mucosa displays the villi and crypts of Lieberkühn, the submucosa contains the submucosal plexus (of Meissner), the muscularis has its inner circular and outer longitudinal smooth muscle layers with the myenteric plexus (of Auerbach) between them, and the serosa covers the exterior. Each villus contains a central lacteal, capillary network, and a core of lamina propria with immune cells. The crypts produce new epithelial cells every three to five days, giving the small intestine one of the highest cell turnover rates in the body. Small intestinal wall anatomy is studied in histology, gastroenterology, and pathology courses. Medical advisory board reviewed. Ready for rendering, real-time, and 3D printing.
