Description

An anterior cross section of the uterus with an ovarian endometrioma (chocolate cyst) visible on one ovary. The cyst contains thick, dark, old blood that has accumulated from repeated cyclic bleeding of ectopic endometrial tissue within the ovarian cortex. The cyst wall is lined with endometrial-type tissue. Endometriomas earn the name chocolate cyst from the dark brown, viscous fluid inside them. They indicate ovarian involvement by endometriosis and often affect fertility by damaging ovarian reserve. Rupture can cause acute pelvic pain and peritoneal irritation.
