Framed in the anterior mediastinum, the thymus sits posterior to the manubrium and body of the sternum and anterior to the pericardium, with its lobes extending superiorly toward the lower neck near the thyroid and inferiorly over the great vessels. As the sequence progresses, a thymic neoplasm expands within thymic parenchyma and begins to efface normal lobulation, crowding the retrosternal space adjacent to the brachiocephalic veins, superior vena cava, ascending aorta, and pulmonary trunk. Medial growth narrows the central compartment while lateral displacement approaches the mediastinal pleura and the anterior margins of the lungs. Boundaries matter here. Clinically, thymic carcinoma and other thymic epithelial tumors present as an anterior mediastinal mass on CT, often prompting a differential that includes lymphoma and germ cell tumor, and the spatial relationship to the left brachiocephalic vein and superior vena cava guides both biopsy planning and resectability. Progressive enlargement also explains compressive symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, or venous congestion, and the animation’s stepwise growth clarifies why subtle early expansion can remain clinically silent until the tumor abuts low-compliance structures like the pericardium and great veins. When discussed alongside thymoma, it also sets up teaching around paraneoplastic associations such as myasthenia gravis and the rationale for extended thymectomy, even though thymic carcinoma behaves more aggressively and less predictably than benign thymic hyperplasia.
