Centered on the male heart in anatomical position, the animation cycles through systole and diastole while keeping the left ventricular apex oriented inferolaterally and the cardiac base positioned posterosuperiorly where the atria receive the great veins. Across each beat, the right and left ventricles thicken and shorten, the right and left auricles (atrial appendages) subtly change contour, and the aortic root and pulmonary trunk expand with ejection before recoiling. Coronary arteries and cardiac veins course over the epicardial surface, while the superior and inferior vena cava enter the right atrium on its superior and inferior aspects, respectively. Motion is the point. Clinically, the visible displacement of the apex and base helps explain why palpation of the apical impulse localizes to the left fifth intercostal space near the midclavicular line, and why changes in that impulse can suggest left ventricular hypertrophy or dilated cardiomyopathy. Watching the ventricular walls contract and relax in sequence also clarifies the mechanical timing that underlies murmurs at the aortic and pulmonic outflow tracts, and why aortic root recoil supports coronary artery perfusion during diastole. The rhythmic filling and emptying you see here maps cleanly onto ECG intervals and bedside auscultation in a way static anatomy cannot.
