Description
Radiographic views track the female large intestine from the cecum in the right lower quadrant into the ascending colon, across the transverse colon, then down the descending and sigmoid segments to the rectum. As the sequence advances, a focal malignant tumor appears along the colonic wall as an area of abnormal density and contour, narrowing the lumen relative to adjacent bowel. Contrast-opacified segments clarify the mucosal outline as the camera angle and magnification shift to center the lesion. Edema and shouldering around the stenosis become easier to appreciate over time. Colorectal carcinoma often first declares itself radiographically by asymmetric wall thickening, an annular constriction (classic apple-core morphology), or an irregular filling defect that interrupts normal haustral pattern, and these findings drive decisions about colonoscopy, biopsy, and surgical planning.
