Description
Radiographic anatomy of the left upper quadrant frames the spleen beneath the left hemidiaphragm and ribs 9 to 11, lateral to the gastric fundus and superior to the left kidney and splenic flexure of the colon. Across the sequence, a focal splenic mass enlarges from the parenchyma toward the hilum, and the silhouette of the organ gradually expands inferomedially as tissue density becomes more heterogeneous. Adjacent structures shift with the growth, with subtle displacement of the gastric bubble and crowding of bowel gas patterns as the splenic contour becomes more lobulated. Splenic malignancy is an uncommon primary diagnosis on plain radiography, but splenomegaly and altered soft tissue density on an abdominal or chest x-ray can be the first clue prompting targeted ultrasound or contrast CT, and ultimately image-guided biopsy when safe. The animated progression clarifies what a single film cannot, how increasing tumor burden can elevate the left hemidiaphragm, narrow the subdiaphragmatic space, and create mass effect that mimics gastric or renal pathology while remaining centered in the splenic bed. Subtle changes matter.
