Description
Beginning at the cervical trachea, the sequence tracks inferiorly to the carina and into the right and left main bronchi, emphasizing the C shaped cartilaginous rings that stiffen the proximal airway and the progressively irregular cartilage plates of the intrapulmonary bronchi. As the camera advances, the bronchial tree divides into lobar bronchi (three on the right, two on the left) and then segmental bronchi that course centrally within each bronchopulmonary segment, while the pulmonary arteries remain superior at the hilum and the pulmonary veins drift more anterior and inferior. Peripheral airways narrow into bronchioles and terminate at alveolar sacs distributed through the spongy parenchyma. Breathing motion is shown. Clinical relevance sits in the anatomy you must navigate in real time, an endotracheal tube positioned too deep will preferentially enter the wider, more vertical right main bronchus, a classic cause of unilateral left lung atelectasis.
