Presented in lateral profile, the pedal digits are isolated in blue against the darker brown foot and distal leg, allowing clear identification of the phalanges of the hallux and lesser toes in relation to the metatarsophalangeal joints and the interphalangeal articulations. From proximal to distal, each toe tapers toward the distal phalanx, with the dorsal contour (nail-bearing surface) positioned superior to the plantar fat pad. The hallux lies most anterior and plantar in this side view, while the second through fifth digits align posteriorly with subtle step-offs at the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints. A true lateral perspective matters when you need to communicate sagittal-plane alignment, because flexion contractures at the PIP joint (hammer toe) and hyperextension at the MTP joint (claw toe) read immediately as changes in the dorsal arc and plantar toe purchase. Stress fractures and crush injuries of the distal phalanges, as well as dorsal dislocations at the MTP joints, are often discussed with reference to this same side profile used in clinical photography and lateral radiographs.
