Posterior view centers attention on the hindfoot, with the calcaneus (heel bone) forming the most inferior prominence of the foot and the overlying soft tissue contour defining the heel pad. Superior to the calcaneal tuberosity, the Achilles (calcaneal) tendon courses distally along the midline of the posterior ankle toward its insertion, flanked laterally and medially by the contours of the malleolar region and the posterior compartment musculature.
