Description
Frontal anatomy places the paired kidneys retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column, with the right kidney sitting slightly inferior to the left beneath the costal margin. From each renal hilum, the renal artery and renal vein enter and exit medially, while the renal pelvis tapers into the ureter, which descends anterior to the psoas major toward the pelvis. The ureters course inferiorly and medially to reach the urinary bladder in the midline, and the urethra continues inferior from the bladder neck toward the perineum. Semi-transparent abdominal wall and viscera allow the urinary tract to be read in context with adjacent bowel loops and the anterior abdominal contour. Clinical teaching benefits from this anterior view because it aligns with common cross-sectional orientation and physical examination landmarks while still preserving the retroperitoneal position of the kidneys and ureters. Renal blood supply is a frequent source of confusion for learners, and showing the renal vessels at the hilum clarifies why segmental arterial anatomy matters during partial nephrectomy and why accessory renal arteries can complicate renal transplantation planning. Short urethral length in females also sets the stage for discussing the higher incidence of ascending urinary tract infection and the pathway to pyelonephritis. Clean topography. Use this figure in undergraduate gross anatomy blocks covering the abdomen and pelvis, in nursing and PA curricula emphasizing urinary tract assessment, and in patient-facing education on nephrolithiasis, hydronephrosis, and cystitis, where ureteral course and bladder location need quick explanation. It also fits urology and radiology teaching files that pair surface anatomy with CT or ultrasound correlation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
