Description
Posterior surface anatomy of a prepubertal female child is rendered semi-transparently to reveal the gastrointestinal tract and adjacent retroperitoneal organs. The stomach lies in the left upper quadrant, tucked inferior to the liver and left hemidiaphragm, continuing into the duodenum that sweeps toward the midline before the jejunum and ileum occupy most of the central and lower abdomen. Framing the small bowel, the large intestine forms a peripheral course from the cecum and ascending colon on the right, across the transverse colon, and down the descending and sigmoid colon to the rectum in the midline pelvis. Kidneys sit posteriorly on either side of the vertebral column, reminding the viewer what is retroperitoneal relative to the peritoneal cavity contents. A rear view is an underused teaching angle for pediatric abdominal anatomy because it reinforces which structures are closest to the posterior abdominal wall and where pain can refer. Flank tenderness in pyelonephritis, costovertebral angle percussion findings, and posterior surgical or interventional access planning all benefit from seeing the kidneys behind the bowel loops and mesentery. It also helps clarify why constipation and rectal loading can be palpated and assessed with attention to the sacrum and pelvic outlet rather than the anterior abdominal wall alone. Orientation matters.
