Description
Layered over the external skin and hair of an adult female head and upper neck, the illustration reveals the facial musculature and the deeper neurovascular and glandular anatomy in anatomical position. Superficially, muscles such as the frontalis, orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major, orbicularis oris, masseter, and platysma occupy the anterior and lateral face, while the sternocleidomastoid runs obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle on the anterolateral neck. Deep to these planes, the parotid gland sits posterolateral to the ramus of the mandible, with the submandibular gland tucked inferior to the mandibular body, and major vessels and nerves track superiorly and inferiorly through the cervical soft tissues. Clinical relevance concentrates around crowded corridors: the facial nerve (CN VII) branches fan anteriorly through the parotid region toward muscles of expression, the trigeminal sensory branches course across the midface, and the carotid sheath encloses the common and internal carotid arteries with the internal jugular vein and vagus nerve, deep to the sternocleidomastoid.
