Description

Sectioned cranial vault anatomy centers on the superior sagittal sinus running in the midline within the attached layer of dura mater, seated against the inner table of the calvaria and aligned with the sagittal suture region. The sinus occupies the superior border of the falx cerebri and receives bridging veins crossing from the superficial cerebral veins on the convexity, which course inferomedially toward the dural channel. Bone, dura, and the underlying brain surface are presented in layered order from superficial to deep, clarifying the relationship between the skull, meningeal coverings, and venous drainage pathways. Midline dural venous sinus anatomy is a common source of confusion because the superior sagittal sinus is not a true vein but an endothelial-lined space between dural layers, and its adherence to the inner calvaria explains why sinus injury can be brisk and difficult to control. This view maps directly onto clinical problems such as superior sagittal sinus thrombosis and the path of parasagittal bridging veins, whose tearing contributes to subdural hematoma even when the initial trauma is minor. It also supports operative planning for parasagittal craniotomies and vertex approaches, where burr hole placement and dural opening must respect the sinus and adjacent venous lacunae. Bleeding here is unforgiving. Use this illustration in neuroanatomy and head and neck courses when teaching meningeal layers, dural reflections, and venous outflow to the internal jugular vein via the transverse and sigmoid sinuses. It also fits neurosurgery texts and radiology teaching files that correlate sagittal sinus location with CT venography or MR venography findings in suspected dural venous sinus thrombosis.
