Description
Rendered as an anterior head and upper neck study in an adult Asian woman, the semi-transparent integument reveals the layered facial musculature overlying the facial skeleton and cervical fascia. Superficially, platysma blends inferiorly with the superficial fascia, while superiorly the mimetic muscles, including orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major, buccinator, and orbicularis oris, sit anterior to the masseter and temporalis at the lateral face. Red arterial channels course from the neck toward the midface consistent with the external carotid system, including the facial artery crossing the mandible anterior to the masseter and ascending toward the nasal ala and medial canthus, with companion blue venous drainage tracking toward the retromandibular and internal jugular pathways; yellow nerve branches radiate across the cheek and perioral region in the expected distributions of the trigeminal nerve (CN V) sensory territories and the facial nerve (CN VII) motor plexus. Facial anatomy is crowded. That density matters when you teach or operate in the parotid-masseteric region, where CN VII branches traverse superficial to the masseter while the facial artery and vein lie more anterior and deep, a relationship that drives safe planes in rhytidectomy and parotidectomy and explains why hematoma and neuropraxia cluster around the mandibular border. The anterior course of the facial artery at the mandible and its terminal angular segment also provides a concrete landmark for hemostasis, filler injection risk mitigation, and interpretation of facial ischemia patterns. Use this plate for head and neck gross anatomy, dental and maxillofacial teaching on facial spaces, or surgical atlas figures illustrating the relationship of mimetic muscles to the facial nerve and external carotid branches in an anterior approach. It also fits patient-facing education when discussing Bell palsy, facial laceration repair, or procedural mapping for nerve blocks and cosmetic injections. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
