Description
Color coded cutaneous territories are mapped onto an adult female torso and head in a right lateral view, spanning the cheek and lateral neck, the shoulder cap, the lateral thoracic wall including the breast contour, and the proximal lateral arm. Superiorly, facial skin over the zygomatic and mandibular regions aligns with trigeminal divisions, while the posterolateral scalp trends toward upper cervical cutaneous branches. Across the clavicle and deltoid region, the supraclavicular nerves and upper lateral cutaneous nerve of arm occupy the transition from neck to shoulder, and intercostal lateral cutaneous branches course inferiorly over the rib cage. Dermatomes, not individual named nerves, appear to be the organizing principle. Lateral body surface mapping matters when symptoms do not respect musculoskeletal boundaries. Herpes zoster commonly tracks a single thoracic dermatome and wraps from paraspinal regions to the anterolateral chest, and a lateral projection makes that band pattern easier to teach than a straight anterior view. The same territories guide neurologic localization in cervical radiculopathy (C5 over the lateral shoulder and proximal arm) and help predict sensory changes after procedures that traverse the axilla or chest wall, including mastectomy and intercostal nerve blocks. Small color shifts. Big diagnostic implications. Use this asset for dermatology and neurology teaching on dermatomal distributions, for nursing education on sensory testing and shingles counseling, and for surgical patient handouts explaining expected numbness patterns after breast and axillary operations. It also fits well in pain medicine and regional anesthesia materials when discussing thoracic and cervical segmental coverage from intercostal and cervical plexus blocks. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
