Superficial muscles such as orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, buccinator, platysma, and the anterior belly of digastric sit over deeper planes that include temporalis and the suprahyoid compartment, while the external ear lies posterior to the mandibular ramus as a clear surface landmark. Neural pathways course anteriorly and inferiorly across these planes, and major neck vessels track deep to superficial fascia with the carotid sheath expected medial to the sternocleidomastoid and the jugular venous pathway lateral to the carotid artery in standard anatomy. Surgical anatomy drives the value of this lateral dissection-style view: a clinician can mentally map the facial nerve (CN VII) as it exits the stylomastoid foramen, traverses the parotid gland, and branches across the masseter toward the orbicularis muscles, which is the same relationship protected during parotidectomy and evaluated in Bell palsy. Landmarks along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid orient you to common cervical nerve blocks and to the “danger zone” for accessory nerve (CN XI) injury during posterior triangle lymph node biopsy, where postoperative shoulder droop can follow. Small distances matter. This perspective also aligns with teaching the course of the external carotid artery and its facial and superficial temporal branches relative to the mandible and zygomatic arch.
