Description

The trachea descends in the superior mediastinum before bifurcating into the right and left main bronchi, which branch into lobar and segmental bronchi coursing inferiorly and laterally within the pulmonary parenchyma toward the alveolar regions. Cardiac musculature is visible deep to the lungs, with the atrial contours positioned superior to the thicker ventricular myocardium, while the esophagus tracks inferiorly in the posterior mediastinum, immediately posterior to the left atrium and anterior to the vertebral column.
