Description
Endoluminal colon mucosa fills the frame, oriented as it would be seen during colonoscopy with the lumen central and the bowel wall forming circumferential mucosal folds. The overall distribution implies skip involvement rather than a continuous sheet of disease. Crohn’s disease in the colon matters because the endoscopic pattern guides both differential diagnosis and biopsy strategy, distinguishing segmental colitis with aphthous and serpiginous ulcers from the diffuse, uninterrupted friability more typical of ulcerative colitis. Cobblestoning reflects deep ulceration and mucosal edema, a surface correlate of transmural inflammation that predicts complications you plan around, including strictures, fistulas, and perianal disease.
