Description

Oriented in lateral anatomical position, the female temporal bone is rendered with the squamous part forming the thin lateral wall of the cranium, while the mastoid portion lies posteroinferior to the external acoustic meatus. The tympanic part curves anteroinferiorly to complete the bony rim of the meatus, and the zygomatic process projects anteriorly to meet the zygomatic bone at the zygomatic arch. Inferior to the squamous part sits the mandibular fossa and articular tubercle, immediately anterior to the external acoustic meatus and directly related to the condylar process of the mandible at the temporomandibular joint. Sutural margins for the parietal and occipital bones are implied superiorly and posteriorly along the temporal lines and mastoid region. Clinically, a clean lateral view of the external acoustic meatus and mastoid region anchors teaching around otoscopy, temporal bone CT orientation, and the surface landmarks used in mastoidectomy. The relationship of the meatus to the mandibular fossa explains why TMJ arthrosis or condylar fractures can refer pain to the ear, and why preauricular approaches must respect the nearby course of the facial nerve as it exits the stylomastoid foramen just inferior and posterior to the meatus. Temporal bone fractures often track through the squamous or petrous portions, so this surface anatomy helps readers anticipate patterns that correlate with conductive hearing loss, hemotympanum, or cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea. Use this asset for head and neck anatomy courses, ENT and maxillofacial surgical atlases, and patient education on ear canal disorders or TMJ pain referral. It also supports radiology teaching files when correlating lateral skull landmarks with axial and coronal temporal bone imaging. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
