Description
Centered on the inframammary (submammary) region of the anterior thorax, the model defines the inframammary fold along the inferior border of the breast as it drapes over the pectoralis major fascia. Inferior to the fold, the skin transitions onto the upper abdominal wall, while superior and slightly lateral contours correspond to the lower pole of the breast and the underlying costal cartilages. Medially, the surface landmarks approach the parasternal line over the sternum, and laterally the chest wall curves toward the anterior axillary line. Blue surface markers on the chest provide reference points for mapping the inframammary crease and adjacent breast footprint. Surgeons pay close attention to this area because the inframammary fold acts as a fixed aesthetic and functional boundary between the breast and the upper abdomen, and small asymmetries become obvious after augmentation, reduction mammoplasty, or implant-based reconstruction. An inframammary incision offers direct access to the subpectoral (infrapectoral) pocket while helping conceal the scar in the crease, but the approach demands accurate fold positioning to avoid a “double-bubble” deformity or inferior implant malposition. Skin-on-skin contact in this fold also concentrates moisture and friction, making it a common site for intertrigo, candidiasis, and postoperative wound maceration.
