Description
Centered on the posterior thorax, the infrascapular region is indicated bilaterally just inferior to the scapular bodies, around the inferior angles and the overlying soft tissues of the posterior thoracic wall. Medially, the highlighted area approaches the paraspinal gutter over the thoracic erector spinae and multifidus adjacent to the spinous processes; laterally, it tracks toward the posterior axillary line where serratus anterior interdigitates with the ribs. Expect surface correspondence with the lower fibers of trapezius, rhomboid major, infraspinatus near the scapular spine, and the superior portions of latissimus dorsi and teres major as they sweep inferolaterally from the inferior angle. Arms held slightly abducted protract the scapulae and open the scapulothoracic interval. Key surface landmark. Clinically, this region is where you listen for pathology at the lung bases, since the inferior angle of the scapula typically overlies the level of T7 in anatomical position and shifts with shoulder motion, changing access to posterior lower lobe fields. It also concentrates common myofascial pain generators, including trigger points along the medial scapular border (rhomboids) and in the lower trapezius and latissimus dorsi, patterns that often mimic posterior shoulder or interscapular pain and can accompany scapular dyskinesis. For dermatologic and neurologic teaching, the infrascapular area is a practical site to correlate thoracic dermatomes and the distribution of herpes zoster along posterior cutaneous branches. Suitable for gross anatomy and surface anatomy labs covering the back and thoracic wall, as well as physical therapy and sports medicine materials on scapulothoracic mechanics, postural syndromes, and posterior shoulder pain mapping. It also fits clinical skills manuals for posterior chest examination and auscultation positioning in adult patients with diverse skin tones. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
