Description
Presented in a plantar (sole) view, the forefoot is oriented with the hallux medially and the little toe (digit V) laterally, allowing the phalanges and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints to be read in true anatomical position. The fifth toe is shown with its proximal, middle, and distal phalanges aligned distal to the head of the fifth metatarsal, while the hallux is distinguished by its two phalanges and larger medial soft tissue pad. A blue color overlay highlights a single lesser toe, drawing attention to one digit against the surrounding brown skin and making side-to-side comparisons between digits straightforward. Skin creases at the interphalangeal joints and the plantar digital pads help cue joint level and load-bearing surfaces. Plantar toe anatomy matters because many common forefoot complaints declare themselves on the sole: plantar plate insufficiency at the second MTP joint, metatarsalgia under the metatarsal heads, and callus patterns that track abnormal pressure from hallux valgus or lesser-toe deformity.
