Description
Centered over the posterior trunk, the blue-highlighted lumbar region spans roughly from the inferior border of the 12th rib to the superior margin of the sacrum, with the midline corresponding to the lumbar spinous processes (L1 to L5). Lateral to the vertebral column, the contour implies the paraspinal muscle mass of the erector spinae beneath the thoracolumbar fascia, tapering toward the iliac crests and posterior superior iliac spines. The rear three-quarter perspective also places the flank (loin) in view, where the latissimus dorsi drapes posterolaterally and the deeper quadratus lumborum sits between the 12th rib and the iliac crest. Surface landmarks matter here. Clinically, this is the region examined for costovertebral angle tenderness, a bedside finding that localizes pain over the kidneys, which lie retroperitoneally deep to the flank from about T12 to L3, with the left typically positioned slightly superior to the right. The same topography frames common sources of mechanical low back pain, including paraspinal strain and facet-mediated pain around the lumbosacral junction, and it anchors procedural teaching for lumbar puncture or spinal anesthesia performed below the conus medullaris, usually at the L3 to L4 or L4 to L5 interspace using the iliac crests as a landmark line.
