Description

Anterior thoracic surface anatomy is presented in an upright adult Black male, centered on the mammary region overlying the pectoralis major and its fascia. Bilateral areolae and nipples sit symmetrically on the anterior chest wall, lateral to the sternum and typically over the 4th intercostal space, with the medial mammary contour approaching the sternal border and the lateral chest blending toward the anterior axillary line. Superiorly, the clavicular region and upper pectoral contour frame the field, while inferiorly the lower pectoralis and upper abdominal wall define the inframammary transition. Surface relationships in the male breast are a frequent teaching point because the nipple–areola complex remains a reliable landmark for rib level, intercostal spaces, and the underlying pectoralis major, even when subcutaneous fat obscures muscle definition. Clinically, this region is where gynecomastia is assessed and where male breast carcinoma, although uncommon, often presents as a subareolar mass with possible skin or nipple changes. The anterior perspective also aligns with procedural planning for chest tube insertion landmarks, pectoral nerve blocks, and incision placement that respects the pectoralis major fibers and the superficial pectoral fascia.
