Description
Positioned in lateral profile, the highlighted mastoid region lies posterior and slightly inferior to the auricle, centered over the mastoid process of the temporal bone just behind the external acoustic meatus. Anterior to the mark sits the ramus and angle of the mandible, while inferiorly the contour continues into the upper neck where the sternocleidomastoid attaches along the mastoid tip and the posterior belly of the digastric arises from the mastoid notch. Superficial landmarks you would expect in this zone include the postauricular sulcus, the parotid tail anteroinferiorly, and the posterior auricular area overlying emissary veins and the mastoid air cell system deep to cortical bone. Clinically, this is the surface geography that guides evaluation of postauricular pain and swelling when acute otitis media progresses to mastoiditis, and it also frames where a retroauricular incision is placed for tympanomastoid surgery. Deep to this skin mark are structures ENT surgeons and radiologists think about immediately, including the mastoid air cells and antrum, the sigmoid sinus coursing posteromedially, and the facial nerve within its bony canal as it approaches the stylomastoid foramen. Small details matter. A tender, erythematous postauricular region with protrusion of the pinna is not a subtle sign, and this view keeps that relationship clear. Use this lateral head and neck reference in gross anatomy or ENT teaching to anchor bony landmarks of the temporal skull, or in clinical education materials discussing mastoiditis, mastoidectomy approaches, or postauricular lymphadenopathy. It also fits well in radiology context pages where CT of the temporal bone is correlated to surface anatomy for localization and incision planning.
