Description
Prominent facial muscles frame the anterior head and upper neck, with the orbicularis oculi encircling the orbit, the zygomaticus major running inferolaterally toward the modiolus, and the masseter occupying the lateral mandibular ramus. Inferior to the mandible, the platysma spreads superficially across the anterolateral neck, while the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, marking a clear boundary between anterior and posterior cervical triangles. Superficial arteries and veins course over and between these muscle planes, and the yellow nerve network tracks with predictable surface topography, including trigeminal (CN V) cutaneous territories and the terminal branches of the facial nerve (CN VII) radiating across the cheek and jaw. Clean landmarks. Facial nerve anatomy is easier to teach from an anterior presentation because you can relate motor branches to palpable structures, for example the buccal and marginal mandibular branches crossing superficial to the masseter and along the inferior border of the mandible where iatrogenic injury can occur during submandibular gland surgery, rhytidectomy, or mandibular fixation. The same surface mapping helps explain why Bell palsy produces ipsilateral brow ptosis and oral commissure droop, and why parotid-region pathology can distort both facial expression and cutaneous sensation. Vascular overlays support discussion of the facial artery’s tortuous course toward the medial canthus and the venous connections that underlie infection spread in the central face. Use this artwork for head and neck anatomy labs, cranial nerve teaching in neuroanatomy blocks, and surgical education materials covering parotidectomy, facial laceration repair, and regional anesthesia for dental and maxillofacial practice.
