Description
Anterior thoracoabdominal anatomy of a male child is rendered with the skin removed, leaving the pectoralis major spanning from the sternum and clavicle to the humerus and the deltoid capping the lateral shoulder. Superiorly, the sternocleidomastoid frames the anterolateral neck while superficial cervical veins and the external jugular course toward the subclavian vein above the clavicle. Arterial pathways track from the common carotid in the neck into the subclavian and axillary arteries, then distally along the brachial artery over the medial arm, with paired superficial veins running more anteriorly in the subcutaneous plane. Under the upper chest musculature, the expected position of the mediastinal viscera is implied, with the great vessels oriented deep to the manubrium and medial to the proximal clavicles. Pediatric proportion changes the surface map. In boys, a relatively prominent thymus in the superior anterior mediastinum can alter the contour of the upper chest on imaging and during sternotomy, and the caliber and branching pattern of the carotid and subclavian systems guides central venous access planning. The low, slightly upward perspective is helpful for appreciating how the neurovascular bundle passes from the root of the neck into the axilla, a corridor relevant to supraclavicular blocks and to traction injuries around the shoulder girdle. Small landmarks matter. Use this artwork for teaching thoracic wall and neck anatomy in preclinical gross anatomy, pediatrics modules on normal mediastinal appearance, or procedure-oriented instruction on internal jugular and subclavian line placement where vessel course relative to clavicle and sternocleidomastoid must be memorized.
