Description
Centered on an anterior, standing figure of a female child, the illustration layers thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera over a faint musculoskeletal outline, with major arteries and veins rendered in red and blue and peripheral nerves in yellow. Superiorly, the heart sits in the mediastinum between the lungs, with the great vessels ascending from the cardiac base and descending along the midline as the thoracic and abdominal aorta with the inferior vena cava to its right. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant while the stomach and spleen lie more left and lateral, and small bowel loops and the colon fill the central abdomen, flanked posteriorly by the kidneys and their renal vessels. In the pelvis, the urinary bladder lies anterior and inferior, with prepubertal internal genital organs (uterus and ovaries) expected to sit posterior to the bladder and superior to the pelvic floor, though they may be understated depending on labeling intent.
