Description
Rendered in a lateral view of the male upper torso, the esophagus descends in the posterior mediastinum, posterior to the trachea and heart, then crosses the diaphragm through the esophageal hiatus to reach the cardia of the stomach. The stomach (ventriculus) occupies the left upper abdomen, with the fundus positioned superiorly beneath the left hemidiaphragm and the body curving anteroinferiorly into a J-shaped contour. Proximally, the gastroesophageal junction sits just left of the midline, while the greater curvature bows inferiorly and laterally and the lesser curvature remains more medial and superior. Red highlighting isolates the foregut conduit and reservoir against a translucent rib cage and vertebral column for clean spatial orientation. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this side-on relationship between thoracic esophagus, diaphragm, and gastric cardia is where reflux disease declares itself, because the lower esophageal sphincter and diaphragmatic crura function as a coupled anti-reflux barrier that can fail in sliding hiatal hernia.
