Description
Anterior full-body orientation frames the upper gastrointestinal tract in anatomical position, with the esophagus descending in the midline through the inferior neck and thorax to meet the stomach just left of the midline at the gastroesophageal junction. The stomach occupies the left upper quadrant, its lesser curvature forming the superomedial border and its greater curvature sweeping inferolaterally toward the fundus and body before tapering into the gastric antrum. Distally, the pylorus sits more medial and slightly inferior than the fundus, marking the transition toward the proximal duodenum even if the first part of the duodenum is only implied. Gastric topography matters when you are teaching referred pain patterns and interpreting endoscopic or operative descriptions that rely on orientation to the curvatures, antrum, and pylorus. A clear anterior view also helps correlate common disease sites: reflux injury at the distal esophagus, peptic ulcer disease along the lesser curvature and antrum, and gastric outlet obstruction at the pylorus from ulcer-related scarring or malignancy. Think pyloric stenosis, but in adults, and think endoscope navigation. Landmarks stay consistent.
