Description
Presented in dorsal orientation, the toes are isolated in bright blue against dark brown skin of the distal leg and forefoot, directing attention to the dorsal surfaces of the hallux and lesser digits (II to V). From medial to lateral, the hallux lies adjacent to the second toe, with the remaining toes tapering laterally toward the fifth digit; the nail plates, dorsal toe creases, and the contours over the proximal and middle phalanges are implied by the surface modeling. Proximally, the transition in color just above the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints marks where the dorsal forefoot gives way to the highlighted digital region, with the interphalangeal (IP) joints aligned distally and the toe tips forming the terminal pads. Dorsal surface anatomy of the digits matters because it is where extensor tendons and dorsal neurovascular bundles run close to skin, making them vulnerable to laceration and to iatrogenic injury during dorsal MTP and IP approaches.
