Description
Centered on the upper axillary region in anterior aspect, the highlighted armpit fields correspond to the axillary fossa as it lies inferior to the glenohumeral region and lateral to the thoracic wall. Medially, the skin overlying the ribs and serratus anterior forms the axillary base, while anteriorly the contour relates to pectoralis major with pectoralis minor and the clavipectoral fascia deep to it. Laterally, the proximal humerus and the axillary fold frame the space, with the posterior wall inferred where latissimus dorsi and teres major sweep toward the intertubercular sulcus. Surface anatomy matters here. Palpation and procedural access in the axilla depend on understanding what sits just deep to this skin: the axillary artery and vein, cords of the brachial plexus, and clusters of axillary lymph nodes distributed along the vessels and the lateral thoracic wall. That relationship drives real-world decisions, from positioning for an infraclavicular or axillary nerve block to safe dissection planes during sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary lymph node dissection for breast cancer staging. It also explains classic symptoms, for example paresthesia of the medial upper arm when the intercostobrachial nerve is stretched or sacrificed during node clearance, and why hidradenitis suppurativa concentrates in apocrine-bearing axillary skin. Use this figure in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching to orient learners to axillary boundaries, folds, and landmarks before introducing the deeper neurovascular bundle. It also suits surgical atlases, patient-education handouts on axillary surgery or lymphadenopathy, and dermatology content focused on axillary inflammatory disease in darker skin tones.
