Description
Seen through a semi-transparent integument from a left posterolateral, side-back perspective, the pediatric thoracic and abdominal viscera are arranged in situ: paired lungs occupying the thoracic cavity with the heart seated anterior to the vertebral column and superior to the diaphragm. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver sits predominantly in the right upper quadrant, while the stomach and spleen lie more to the left, with small and large intestines filling the central and inferior abdomen. Posteriorly, the kidneys and suprarenal glands are positioned retroperitoneally on either side of the spine, with bowel loops draping anterior to them; in the female pelvis, the urinary bladder lies anterior and the prepubertal uterus and ovaries are small and centrally located relative to the rectum. A posterolateral view is useful for teaching depth, because it separates anterior parenchymal organs from posterior retroperitoneal structures in a way that frontal schematics often flatten. Kidney location and rib relationships matter in pediatric trauma, where flank contusions, hematuria, or a suspected renal laceration hinge on understanding how much of the kidney lies protected beneath the lower ribs. Orientation of the diaphragm and basal lungs also supports discussions of lower-lobe pneumonia, pleural effusion layering, and why abdominal distension can restrict ventilation in younger patients.
