Description
Presented in lateral cutaway, the female head, neck, thorax, and abdominopelvic cavities are opened to place the viscera in context against the body surface. Superiorly, the nasal and oral cavities transition posteriorly into the pharynx, with the trachea descending anterior to the esophagus into the thorax. One lung is shown in profile with its lobar contour, seated laterally to the mediastinum and separated from the abdominal organs by the dome of the diaphragm. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant with the gallbladder tucked on its visceral surface, while the stomach lies more leftward and continues into the coiled small intestine and the framing large intestine. A side view like this clarifies the anterior to posterior stacking that students often miss in frontal schematics: airway in front, alimentary tract behind, and diaphragm as the moving boundary between respiratory mechanics and abdominal pressure. That relationship matters in practice, because conditions such as hiatal hernia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and diaphragmatic eventration are best understood when you can visualize how the esophagus traverses the diaphragm and meets the stomach at the gastroesophageal junction.
