Description
Anterior thoracoabdominal anatomy is rendered in a 3D cutaway of an adult Asian female, with the trachea descending in the midline and bifurcating into the main bronchi as the paired lungs occupy the right and left pleural cavities. Medial to the lungs, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum with its apex directed inferolaterally to the left. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver fills the right upper quadrant, while the stomach lies in the left upper quadrant, tucked inferomedial to the left lobe of the liver, continuing as esophagus to stomach and onward into the coiled jejunoileal loops framed by the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon. Spatial relationships matter here because many symptoms and exam findings localize by compartment and quadrant, and this view makes that mapping straightforward: hepatomegaly displaces the stomach and transverse colon inferiorly, gastric distension elevates the left hemidiaphragm, and cardiomegaly expands within the pericardial silhouette between the lungs. Clear continuity of the alimentary canal also supports teaching common obstruction patterns, for example small-bowel obstruction with dilated central loops versus large-bowel obstruction with peripheral colonic distension. Orientation is the point. Use this asset for gross anatomy lectures on thoracic and abdominal viscera, for internal medicine and surgery teaching on abdominal pain localization, and for patient-facing education where sex-specific body habitus and organ positioning need to be shown without focusing on the reproductive tract.
