Description

Posteriorly, the heel region is dominated by the calcaneal (heel) contour, with the calcaneal tuberosity forming the rounded inferior prominence and the plantar margin turning anteriorly toward the sole. Superior to the calcaneus, the Achilles tendon can be inferred as it approaches its insertion on the posterior calcaneus, while the skin ridge over the retrocalcaneal area defines the transition into the dorsal rearfoot and the distal leg. Laterally, the hindfoot outline suggests the calcaneal wall and the lateral malleolar region proximally, while medially the contour narrows toward the tarsal tunnel side of the ankle. A dorsal-oriented view of the heel is a workhorse angle for teaching rearfoot surface anatomy because it aligns what you palpate with what you treat: posterior calcaneus, Achilles insertion, and the bursal planes that sit between tendon and bone.
