Description
Anteriorly, the proximal humerus rotates into a front-facing orientation so the greater tubercle (tuberculum majus) reads as a broad, irregular prominence lateral to the humeral head and superior to the surgical neck. As the camera settles, the intertubercular sulcus (bicipital groove) becomes the key divider between the greater tubercle laterally and the lesser tubercle medially, with the groove running inferiorly toward the humeral shaft. Subtle surface relief is emphasized across the tubercle’s facets where rotator cuff tendons attach, and the lateral contour of the arm bone is kept dominant in frame to support landmark recognition. Palpation and imaging interpretation both hinge on this topography. Greater tubercle fractures, often from a fall on an abducted arm or during anterior shoulder dislocation, can displace the supraspinatus and infraspinatus insertions and alter glenohumeral mechanics.
