Description

Centered in the trunk, the thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera are arranged in anatomical position from the cervical region to the pelvic floor, with the brain and spinal cord aligned along the midline and peripheral nerves radiating into the limbs. Anterior to the vertebral column, the heart sits in the mediastinum between the lungs, while the diaphragm separates the thorax from the abdominal cavity containing liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen, and small and large intestines. Inferiorly, the female pelvic organs occupy the lesser pelvis, with the uterus positioned between urinary bladder anteriorly and rectum posteriorly, and the ovaries located laterally in the adnexa near the uterine tubes. Bony landmarks remain readable throughout. Spatial relationships across systems matter when you are teaching cross-sectional anatomy or planning operative corridors, because vessels, nerves, and viscera rarely respect textbook boundaries between an organ system and its neighbors. For example, the ureters descend retroperitoneally and pass inferior to the uterine arteries near the cervix (the classic water under the bridge relationship), a practical point in hysterectomy and in pelvic lymph node dissection where iatrogenic ureteral injury remains a real risk. Pelvic pain, adnexal torsion, ectopic pregnancy, and fibroid-related mass effect also make more sense when you can place the uterus, tubes, ovaries, bowel, and bladder in one internal map. Nothing is isolated.
