Presented in lateral profile with a partial cutaway through the cranium and upper neck, the head is opened to reveal the cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, and brainstem in continuity with the upper cervical spinal cord. Superficial and deep muscles of facial expression and mastication, including orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, masseter, and temporalis, lie lateral to the skull and mandible, with their fibers oriented around the oral fissure and temporomandibular joint. Running between these layers, branches of the facial nerve (CN VII) radiate anteriorly from the parotid region while trigeminal sensory territories track along the maxilla and mandible, and the common carotid artery ascends in the neck to bifurcate into internal and external carotid systems with accompanying jugular venous drainage. Lateral head-and-neck anatomy is where neurovascular relationships become actionable. The crossing of CN VII branches over the masseter and toward the zygomatic and buccal regions frames both the pattern of weakness in Bell palsy and the zones at risk during parotidectomy. The carotid bifurcation and proximal internal carotid course are key landmarks for carotid endarterectomy and for explaining ischemic stroke mechanisms, while the temporomandibular joint and masticatory musculature support teaching around TMJ dysfunction and mandibular division (V3) blocks.
