Description
Rendered as a full-body adult female figure with the integument opened to reveal viscera, the illustration places the thoracic organs superior to the diaphragm and the abdominal and pelvic organs inferior within the peritoneal and pelvic cavities. Centrally, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum with the great vessels ascending and descending along the midline, while the lungs occupy the pleural cavities lateral to the mediastinum. Inferiorly, the liver lies mainly in the right upper quadrant beneath the costal margin, the stomach and spleen sit more leftward, and coils of small intestine are framed by the large intestine; paired kidneys rest retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column.
