Description
Posteriorly oriented anatomy of a male child is rendered with a translucent skin envelope, allowing the axial skeleton and major organ systems to remain in situ. The vertebral column, ribs, scapulae, and posterior pelvis form the bony framework, while the spinal cord lies centrally within the vertebral canal and gives rise to segmental spinal nerves that course laterally through the intervertebral foramina into the upper and lower limbs. Deep to the rib cage, the posterior contours of the lungs and mediastinal silhouette align anterior to the thoracic spine, and the paired kidneys sit retroperitoneally on either side of the upper lumbar vertebrae, inferior to the diaphragm and posterior to the abdominal viscera. A back view like this is where relationships become clinically legible, because the cord, nerve roots, and paraspinal landmarks line up exactly the way you approach them in practice, from lumbar puncture and epidural anesthesia to posterior spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Nerve root compression from disc herniation makes more sense when you can track the exiting spinal nerves into the brachial plexus distribution in the arm and the lumbosacral plexus distribution in the leg.
