Presented in lateral profile, the figure localizes the kidneys to the posterior flank, with paired blue markers placed inferior to the 12th rib and superior to the iliac crest on either side of the lumbar spine. From this side-on vantage, the renal areas sit posterior to the lateral abdominal wall musculature, deep to the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis, and just anterior to the paraspinal mass of erector spinae. The right marker sits slightly more inferior than the left in keeping with normal asymmetry from the liver, while the umbilical and hypogastric regions remain anterior and inferior relative to the highlighted renal fields. Surface mapping of kidney position matters because renal and ureteric pathology often presents as posterior flank pain rather than anterior abdominal tenderness, and clinicians routinely triangulate symptoms against the 12th rib, costovertebral angle, and iliac crest.
