Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the cervical spine sits inferior to the skull base, with the mandible and maxillary dentition in profile and the thoracic cage extending posterior to the sternum and costal cartilages. Along the posterolateral neck, the levator scapulae forms a slender, oblique band running from the upper cervical transverse processes (classically C1 to C4) inferolaterally to the superior angle and medial border of the scapula. Anterior to it, the sternocleidomastoid defines the anterolateral contour of the neck, while the clavicle spans anteromedially toward the manubrium and frames the root of the neck. Bony landmarks read cleanly. Functionally, this muscle matters because it links cervical posture to scapular position: contraction elevates the scapula and can contribute to ipsilateral cervical side-bending and rotation when the scapula is fixed. Clinically, levator scapulae trigger points and strain are common sources of posterolateral neck pain that radiates to the superior medial scapular border, often confused with cervical facet referral or C5 radiculopathy. For procedural anatomy, its relationship to the cervical transverse processes and the posterior triangle helps orient ultrasound-guided injections and guides surgical dissection planes around the spinal accessory nerve and the dorsal scapular nerve, which commonly courses deep to the levator scapulae. Educators can drop this lateral perspective into cervical and shoulder-girdle modules to teach muscle attachments, scapulocervical mechanics, and landmark-based palpation of the superior angle of the scapula.
