Description
Seen in lateral profile beneath intact facial skin, the nasalis is presented as a thin muscular sheet over the nasal cartilages, with its transverse (compressor naris) fibers spanning across the dorsum of the external nose and its alar portion coursing inferiorly toward the alar cartilage. Anteriorly, fibers blend with the aponeurosis on the nasal dorsum and with adjacent slips of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, while posterior attachment relates to the maxilla lateral to the piriform aperture. Posterior and inferior to the nose, the masseter overlies the ramus of the mandible and the temporalis occupies the temporal fossa, establishing the facial planes that frame the nasalis in this side view. Bony landmarks of the nasal bone and maxilla remain faintly visible through the overlay. Functionally, this is the muscle that modulates nostril aperture, narrowing the nares via the compressor naris and influencing alar flare through its alar part, a relationship that becomes obvious when teaching nasal valve mechanics and external nasal airflow. Surgeons working in rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction often need a clear mental map of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system around the nose, since dissection and re-draping over the upper lateral cartilage and alar cartilage can alter dynamic nasal function as well as surface contour.
